Paul Menard managed to find enough draft partners to work his way to a 15th place qualifying spot for the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in his #21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang on Saturday.
Aerodynamic changes to the cars – a new package introduced at the Vegas event had drivers looking for friends and partners to draft with during qualifying.
“With everyone pretty much running wide open, what you need to do is be catching a car in front of you just as you finish your second lap,” said Menard in a Wood Brothers press release. “The problem is that if that if the car you’re catching has a problem and has to back off, then you have a problem too.”
That was exactly what happened for Menard as he was behind a driver that got loose and had to let up in the corner which caused him to check up as well.
That came in the second of three rounds of qualifying as Menard finished 23rd in the opening round to advance among the top 24 but missed the cut for the final qualifying session with the top dozen.
